Server Rack

Posted by – March 31, 2010

I am in the process of building a server rack and while it’s fun and dandy, I don’t think I’d do it again. My first shot my measurements were off, as you can (probably) see below:

I’ve got to redo it, but it’s a work in progress. Still saving money compared to buying a rack. Total investment so far in this I think is around $100-$150.

I’ll probably make a dedicated page on here to the rack building, but I just wanted to update the blog :)

Edit: here is the page http://www.riscit.info/server-rack/

newest project: wopr

Posted by – September 8, 2009

I’m going to attempt to build a functional version of the WOPR supercomputer from the movie Wargames. Well, mine won’t have supercomputer power, but it’ll be really rad.

Here’s my project page I will be keeping updates on: http://www.riscit.info/wopr/

centillion 100 hacking

Posted by – August 26, 2009

I had bought an old BayNetworks Centillion 100 off ebay and the MCP board came with a password which the seller did not know. So I had to figure this out or I could not use the thing at all. I have included screen captures from this and if you click on the images, you will get full res pictures.

technology keeps amazing me

Posted by – August 22, 2009

I admit it, I don’t keep up with technology as much as I used to. Blasphemy for a geek such as me, I know, so I’m trying to keep up with it more lately. Here are some outstandingly cool things I’ve come across that’s really transforming (or should) our culture.

CBS embedding video into magazines – I see this and think that maybe it’s inspiration came from movies.  Pretty awesome.

Augmented reality on your cell phone – the picture says it all. Read more on HackADay.

sim card reader

Posted by – August 16, 2009

I saw on ladyada’s site a new SIM reader project she cooked up, it looked cool so I decided to give it a shot. You can view the project here: http://ladyada.net/make/simreader/index.html

If you would like to purchase this kit (or just the PCBs), you may visit Adafruit.

tv-b-gone

Posted by – March 23, 2009

tv-b-gone is a small electronic device which will turn off tvs. Quite fun in bars and places with banks of tvs. I’ve done some modification to my tv-b-gone. I originally got a PCB for it off of adafruit here.
